Lou Dobbs Has ACORN Breakthrough

September 19, 2009

ACORN pill

I envision Lou Dobbs sitting with a therapist, role playing with little Gingrich and Hannity dolls from some sort of Conservative icon therapy doll collection, digging deep – past the Ted Turner company picnic brainwashing – to his true thoughts and feelings. And then, the revelation. Maybe North Koreans aren’t thin simply because they ride bicycles everywhere. And maybe ACORN is a criminal organization, and most mainstream media failed to do their job on this story!

Dobbs revealed his breakthrough to CNN viewers, beginning an episode last week by asking, “Did the mainstream media fail to cover ACORN responsibly?” And, “Why have we not seen more coverage of this outfit?”

Dobbs on ACORN

Point of etiquette, Lou – when you show up this late to the party, it’s no longer considered fashionable. In the case of ACORN, the party is over and now it’s time to clean up the mess. Grab a broom.

When a majority of mainstream media ignores the questionable activities of an organization such as ACORN – a group that acquired a dangerous level of influence with the election of a president it worked tirelessly to seat – the media fails the American people. It also consents implicitly to the exposure of our government to the corrupt ideologies and practices of groups and individuals that would not otherwise have such influence if the media maintained a constant and vigilant light on our government.

But, the true story of ACORN certainly isn’t the first liberal controversy to be swept under the rug of media bias – and it won’t be the last. Although many on the left would like to attribute the fall of Van Jones to Glenn Beck and other conservative talking heads – equating to them to bullies on a playground, picking on poor little socialist Van Jones, and twisting the whole ordeal into an issue of race – the reality is that Jones’ fall from grace was an inevitable result of his own choices and actions. It just so happens that the liberal media refused to show up to that news party as well. So covering the story of Jones’ socialist ideologies and radical associations was left to conservative media outlets.

Chris Stirewalt, political editor of the Washington Examiner, raises an excellent point in his discussion with Dobbs.  Ignoring the stories of Van Jones and ACORN goes beyond liberal media bias to reveal a deeper credibility issue for mainstream media.  Liberal media outlets like the New York Times and MSNBC – outlets that blatantly supported Obama’s candidacy – have much to lose in their own credibility if they admit their overwhelming choice for President has made, and continues to make, choices and associations that are questionable at best.

Stirewalt’s analysis seems obvious. When mainstream media outlets – on which so many Americans still depend for news – buy into a candidate for political office lock, stock and barrel, they compromise their willingness and ability to cover the actions and decisions of that political figure with the same depth and integrity given to politicians who haven’t been beneficiary to their editorial support.

Unfortunately, this is the direction in which mainstream media is heading. As Prof. Larry Sabato, of the University of Virginia, concedes in the discussion with Dobbs and Stirewalt, there is rampant and undeniable bias in the media. According to statistics cited by Dobbs, approximately 70 percent of news reporters, editors, producers, etc., identify themselves as liberals. In the absence of some sort of media-wide, Dobbs-style epiphany, MSM will likely continue down this slippery slope, blurring the lines between news coverage and editorializing, and leaving it to news consumers to sort out facts from opinion in order to find some bit of truth in it all.

Great blog! I have an upcoming one that is related to yours (and I link yours). Make sure you check it out.

As always, you tell it like it is.
Sorry to raise such a trivial and niggling point, but the word “media” is plural; ie one medium,
two media. – “The print medium has been usurped by a host of electronic media.”
    Best regards,

Bias is the difference between saying that the class is half empty or half full. What the MSM does is declare the glasses that they like to be completely full regardless of how much is actually in the glass. The glasses that they do not like are either passed over in silence or described as broken and lying in shards on the floor.

The problem with the MSM is not bias, it is profound and blatant dishonesty.

They have not failed the American people, they have betrayed us.

If Lou Dobbs continues to try to be fair and balanced, he may have to join Glenn Beck at Fox, but at least he is trying to report the news, not propaganda.

I’ve thought this for a long, long time. Lou Dobbs should be asked to join his colleagues on Fox News…..fair and balanced.

He may have to hire personal security for him and his family as some at FOX has had to do as well. The state of the fourth estate is a disgrace.

Obama was the favorite for the irrational “emotional” (as his collectivist associations and participation was and is well know) voter who are now questioning their own sanity. When he loses them all he has is the revolutionary left and the liberals who have or want unproductive government jobs.

We all know how quickly emotions change or die. How long can the Left keep stoking the “racist” fires of the elite liberal guilt?

PLEASE stop calling them the “mainstream” media!

I agree with carterthewriter, they are no longer mainstream. I refer to them as “dinosaur” or “old school” media.

      Mainstream Media, it’s not.

How about Fringe. Seemingly more suitable.

    Excellent Anneke–both will work.
    The Dinosaur Media.
    The Old-School Media.
    Paleo-liberal Media.
    Paleo-alphabet Media.
    Unprogressive Regressive Media.

Hmmm, the professor says the source of the story (conservative or liberal media) doesn’t matter as long as it gets out and action is taken. That has some truth to it, but when the ‘sources’ ignore an issue clearly due to choice not mistake…that is a problem.

How about what Rush calls them- state run media? I just about boil when I hear one of their on air people give a twist to a story I have already heard reported accurately or a statement from usually Rush taken out of context and twisted too. Never mind- everyone but Fox is about to fade from view.

LOL. According to the Liberal media they are always right until the conservative media proves them wrong. As was stated it has not been the first time and it won’t be the last. One would think a lesson would be learned but no, not then, not now, not in the future. Anyone that honors God and his principles will be and remain a winner, hmm, kinda like the Bible says, hey, just like our Founding Fathers have said so many times. Right will always be right and left will always be wrong.

when the preponderance of information about this president and his administration is ignored by the fringe press it does not serve the American people.
The blatant liberalism displayed by the so called major nuewspaper outles and the magazin es is a disgrace to this country! It seems that Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and Laura Ingraham are constantly condemned by the major networks also.
If it weren’t for the conservative news and information outlest we the people would be in the dark about every thing detrimental to our country, i.e., Cap & Trade, Healthcare, the ACORN scandal among other plans that this president is trying to get through the houses of congress without the people knowing what is in store for them. Is this wqhat the president meant when he campaigned on Hope & Change and a transparent administration? The audacity of hope translates into “audacity to manipulate and transform a perfectly working representative republic into an economic basket case and a diminished power!
Calling him a liar was too kind!

Please allow me to predict the next situation in which you American Republicans will find yourself: there will be a “tragedy” laid at your collective door–an effort to discredit your growing “Tea Party” type initiatives. This is how it is done South of your border and in every Socialist regime around the world. One of your icons will be smeared, and it will be on film–undeniable. And all those ‘hangers-on’ will silently fade away with your credibility. Mr. Obama cannot ignore the massive numbers that marched on DC–he cannot leave that unanswered. And then the ACORN debacle right after that. He will regain his balance and the “Chicago Way” will manifest itself.

Do not respond to provocations–or be sure to catch the latter on film. Leftist are depending on this and will report it from the 6th column (The White House Press Room).

Those who belong to various Right Wing groups will likely be harassed out of jobs, adding to the recession and will serve as a warning to the rest of you. That is how it is done. If Hillary can get FBI files, it is not much of a stretch to focus on main street—and MUCH less of a risk. Remember that plumber guy?

Esteban Cafe, good words of caution, we are very wary of the American Chavez that we have and the example that unfortunately Venezuela has provided. Any other examples of ways to resist our own Chavez?

Continuing to call them the “mainstream media” gives them credit where none is due and perpetuates what would otherwise be a precipitously declining influence. It is time to refer to them with a new name that will effectively marginalize them and serve notice that they should go off and die for their sins. My own proffering is OLM, the “Old Left Media”.

When I was in grade school we were taught that the news was supposed to answer questions about situations: who, what, where, when and why. The Brave New World speak twists the what and why and sometimes juxtaposes the who. I almost think I have to be everywhere myself and witness things myself in order to know what to believe. At lease with Fox I know that the intention to be honest is there. The only bias anyone calling him/herself a “reporter” should have is the truth. In school, we were marked down for not being accurate or for inserting things into the story that weren’t in the story. Also, reporting only one side of the story is untruthful.
Before we can take back our government we have to demand truthfulness of our “reporters” or change their name to “biasers.” I’m sure that someone will call me a racist for that and it will make no more sense to me than when I say I disapprove of Obama’s “worldview” and get called a racist.
