Bill Maher’s Pathetic Ignorance About Putin

September 22, 2009

Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” revealed some frightening ignorance on his show this weekend in an exchange with Matthew Continetti, associate editor at The Weekly Standard. When Continetti pointed out Obama’s mistake in canceling the missile shield and the danger that Vladimir Putin poses to the West, Maher scoffed with derision and ridicule, making wisecracks about how the Cold War is long over.

Perhaps Maher might want to reflect about the reality of there having been no Nuremberg-style trials in the post-Soviet era and what that has meant, in the most tragic sense, for Russia and the world.

First clue: it has something to do with why the surviving heirs of the Soviet monster remain in power in the Kremlin today. Second clue: it’s connected to why the Putin gang recently ferociously denounced a resolution that equated Stalinism with Nazism.

Throughout the Cold War, liberals like Maher ridiculed conservatives’ concern about the threat of communism. I wonder when Maher will invite Harvey Klehr and John Haynes on his program to discuss their new book, Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, which reveals substantial evidence regarding American communist support for Soviet espionage. Will Maher admit that the liberals were wrong about almost everything they argued regarding the communist infiltration of America? The evidence now proves the liberals wrong beyond reasonable doubt.

A dialogue like that between Maher, Klehr and Haynes may serve as a solid foundation to bringing Maher into contemporary reality regarding Putin. Because the liberal denial continues today, as revealed by Maher, about the present threat emanating from Russia. The fact is that the threat of the KGB, now termed the FSB (Federal Security Service), remains. The FSB is the same old outfit — just with a different name. Konstantin Preobrazhenskiy, a former KGB agent, has revealed that Russian spying continues at a high degree in America and poses a major threat to the U.S.  He has also revealed Russian-Iranian cooperation, and how and why the Putin gang is helping Iran build the bomb.

To add to all of this, there is a serious and deadly problem of the Putin regime’s involvement in, and support of, Islamic terrorism. Alexander Litvinenko paid with his life for, among other things, the information he knew about the FSB’s links to al-Qaeda.

But Bill Maher finds it all really funny. Sort of how my liberal and leftist academic acquaintances used to break into sidesplitting laughter when ridiculing Ronald Reagan’s reference to the Soviet regime as the “Evil Empire.” As someone who comes from the Soviet Union, and who has recently reread the Gulag Archipelago and Varlam Shalamov’s Kolyma Tales,  I still have difficulty understanding what is laughable about it all.

I wonder if Bill Maher would also laugh, in his contemptuous and self-satisfied manner, upon learning the facts regarding the nightmarish, sadistic and barbaric torture that is, as we speak, being inflicted on prisoners in Putin’s prison cells.

Great post, Jamie! Some might argue that the title of this post is 2 words too long… but you were writing about a specific thing and it would take a book to cover the topic otherwise!

I thought exactly the same thing, David.

This has less to do with pathetic ignorance and more to do with diabolical evil then any of us care to admit. Bill Maher is not stupid; he is evil in the truest sense of the word!

Stupid and ignorant are two distinct realities.

If being ignorant makes him evil, then he has a lot of company.

      Does it matter ?

Regardless of whether he’s stupid or evil, he’s still screwing America…

Hey, if the Left can use quasi-religious language to describe murders as sociopaths and psychotics, I can use quasi-religious language to describe people like Bill Maher. To claim this man is stupid or ignorant is to deny his obvious malicious smarts, and, as a consequence, to underestimate him as an influence on the public. As with Jamie’s forebears, my father enjoyed Stalin’s hospitality in the gulag, and based on that reality those that do not understand the evil Communism wrought, are, in my book, evil.

    OK, Cas…

    he is evil.

Having an autographed photo of Putin above his headboard in his bedroom, obviously Maher thinks socialism is winning.

    That’s not ignorence, it’s stupidity!

Jamie, great piece…one note on your opening line:

“Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” revealed some frightening ignorance on his show this weekend”

Isn’t that what he does on every show?

Bill Maher is a perversion of a comic/human being. Basically, he’s a pimple – and pimples always are annoying while still trying to gain undue attention to their pathetic and forgettable lives. His “battle” with religion is based on sheer anger and, ultimately, hatred. His “fight” with the Almighty is truly a midget trying to draw blood from a giant – and always, of course, doomed to failure. I don’t believe in the so-called “anti-Christ,” but there is some evidence that Maher’s unhinged hatred & intolerance of religion veers on insanity and insatiable revenge. If not the anti-Christ, then one of Satan’s little offspring…

“First clue: it has something to do with why the surviving heirs of the Soviet monster remain in power in the Kremlin today. Second clue: it’s connected to why the Putin gang recently ferociously denounced a resolution that equated Stalinism with Nazism.”

Look…Jamie…I know you have your book to support and YOU think these two concepts are interchangable, but I think they disagree with this primarily because it’s inaccurate.

” I wonder when Maher will invite Harvey Klehr and John Haynes on his program to discuss their new book, Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, which reveals substantial evidence regarding American communist support for Soviet espionage. ”

I don’t know…why don’t you contact Maher. If you tell him you think he is a naive useful idiot for a neo-communism superplan to really fake out the world and take over USSR style, I’m sure he will have you on his show yourself. I’d watch…that would be hilarious. Yeah that book reveals American support for Soviet espionage…60 or 70 years ago.
Wake up man…no one outside of the cultic bizarro world is worried about the Soviets who no longer exist. Maybe Russia is a corupt, mafia style government, but you are going to have to let go of the USSR. I know it was a clean, black and white enemy, but trying to make anyone who disagrees with you into a communist is not the answer…even if it is the way things work at FPM.

      bubba,
Are you saying we (Jaime G included) should gauge policies, ideology and the intention behind them by “face” value & disregard history?
Perhaps I’m not understanding your beef with Glazov.

Don’t hate Maher. He’s a shill, a paid media lackey who has sold out his loyalty for thirty pieces of silver, ala Judas Iscariot. Only someone of very low intelligence does something so revolting for pats on the back. That makes him, as Jesus said of the other traitor, someone who would have been better off never having been born. A man worthy of pity.

Well, folks, if one would call the previous comments “pats on the back” then I’d hate to see your wrath and Maher probably should be considered heroic for taking this heat. Not to mention there are very few undisputed facts given as a basis for most points made.

We have to realize this is not really about Maher. We have the C.I.A. doing exactly the same thing from this side of the tracks as KGB or FSB. We have been the perpetrator of torture and killing innocent civilians in any number of what we choose to term “wars of honor or necessity”.
It’s all BS and the sooner we understand that government bureaucrats create wars to keep us under control so they can stay in power, the closer we will be to keeping our heads on straight and our promising and creative young at home instead of training them to kill then come back and try to act like ‘normal’ productive citizens.
We are comparable to the British in our Revolutionary War, sending our soldiers into what we approach as a traditional war and we are going to lose it because our military cannot learn from their losses, cannot sustain it without a draft, our tax payers cannot sustain the cost and will not accept a draft that says they have no choice in whether to give their life or their child’s life for a cause they really know nothing about.

      As Groucho Marx once said;

“Well, Art is Art, isn’t it? Still, on the other hand, water is water. And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now you tell me what you know.”

Sorry folks, but since JJay is spouting ignorant gibberish, I thought that some HUMOROUS gibberish might be a pleasant change of pace…

Maher is not evil but, like so many in his business, he is glaringly stupid. But more important is the question why HBO is giving him a platform. Now, that’s a lot closer to evil.

Bill Maher is an ignorant fool all the way around. Does anyone listen to his crap? and if so, WHY? WHAT can you possibly glean from this arrogant one-sided idiot whose only claim to fame is vicious vindictive satire directed ONLY to conservatives of course. Anyone who can not see both sides of a coin on ANY and All subjects and issues, has severe disabilities and limitations, and should not be taken seriously as an ‘opinion leader’. All hot air and no substance is what lurks in Bill Maher’s feeble mind.

Bill Maher should be arrested. As far as I am concerned, he threatened the life of Sarah Palin. If he was in charge of his own death panel, I guess she would be the first to go. Limbaugh second? No, her downs syndrome baby, no doubt. Did Maher’s Mother drop him on his face repeatedly? Is this why he is so ugly? His face matches what he is like inside. Kids in my neighborhood wear his mask at Halloween. It’s definitely the scariest one around. Is it true he moon lights at an abortion clinic?
