Everything Now about Race for Chris Matthews

September 22, 2009

On Hardball Monday night, Chris Matthews showed he just may be losing it—or at least why he’s been steadily losing his audience for quite some time.

For months, Matthews has been playing the race card at every opportunity—or creating his own, even going so far afield as a weird attempt to make Alaskan Sarah Palin some kind of modern Scarlet O’Hara.

Wrapping up the show with “The Politics Fix,” with guests syndicated radio host Michael Smerconish and Dominic Carter, Senior Political Reporter from  New York 1, Matthews proved there is now no situation where Republicans may have an electoral or polling advantage that Chris Matthews can’t allege is a race thing.

Matthews was complaining that his hero, Barack Obama, was actually playing “hardball,” by keeping his promise to back former Republican Senator Arlen Spectre in his primary against loyal Democrat Joe Sestak, and by trying to ease disastrous New York Democrat Governor David Patterson off to the sidelines.  Dominic Carter was focused on political reality, but Chris had another agenda:

DOMINIC CARTER, NY1 SENIOR POLITICAL REPORTER:…the 800-pound gorilla in the room in all of this is Rudy Giuliani.  They don‘t want Republican Rudy Giuliani to come in and take over the governor‘s mansion.  That‘s the bottom line.

Handwriting has been on the wall for a while for Governor Paterson.  This guy is looking at a Marist poll with 70 percent of the state‘s residents do not want him to run for re-election, bottom line.

MATTHEWS:  OK.  Dare I—dare I—dare I point to the obvious pattern.  Hey, Rudy Giuliani ran against David Dinkins, beat him.  Rudy Giuliani runs against David Paterson, they think he‘ll beat him. Is this Rudy running against an African-American again, exploiting the usual social riffs that come about in these situations in big states?  Is that what‘s going on here that they‘re afraid of?

Yeah, Chris, I spot a “pattern here.”  Any excuse you can think of, you are going to do backflips to call Republicans racist.

Dominick Carter, did not even take one second to consider Matthew’s outrageous playing of the race card out of suit.  He jumped on it with both feet and quashed it.  Maybe Chris got his Carters mixed up.  This Carter, unlike the race-bating former President stayed focused on the race, not on race.

Not “maybe you have a point, Chris,” or even, “Well, that’s something to think about.”  Just a guy willing to stand up to a nationally known gabber who is hyperventilating all over the place and might not have you back again if you don’t make him look good,  and say “No.”  Good for you, sir.

CARTER:  No, I don‘t think that‘s the case, Chris.  I think the bottom line is residents—you know, I‘m trying to figure out a nice way to say this.  But David Paterson has not set well in terms of state residents, with the voters of this state.  And I don‘t think it‘s a racial component in this.  The Democrats just don‘t want to lose the statehouse.  And they don‘t want the down-ticket candidates…

MATTHEWS:  OK.  Does Rudy have.

CARTER: …to go down with him.

After getting shot down hard by the sensible Carter, Matthews then went completely juvenile—and a little bonkers. With sniggering anatomical “humor” but his guests left him out on that limb all by himself, refusing to go there, either.  Smerconish, who was not involved in the exchange, understandably stayed out.

MATTHEWS:  Does Rudy have the stones to run against Andrew Cuomo?

CARTER:  That‘s a good question.  The…

MATTHEWS:  Well, that‘s why I asked you, Dominic.  You can answer.

CARTER:  And that‘s why you‘re asking me.  Giuliani is considering it, who knows?  But if Paterson is the nominee, he‘s probably going to run.

MATTHEWS:  OK.  I‘ll give you a minute to think about it.  We‘ll be right back with Michael Smerconish and Dominic Carter, who will tell us when we come back whether Rudy has the …stuff, using a nice word, to take on Andrew Cuomo, oohhooooeeeooooh!

The video above from the MSNBC website fades out before Chrissy’s final girlish exclamation, not the first time that MSNBC has edited videos or transcripts to try and save their hosts some embarrassment.  Unlike the case of Ed Schultz a few weeks ago, they only faded the video on Matthews, instead of faking the transcript.

One night, while Matthews was bloviating about his Moby Dick, former Vice President Cheney, he muttered under his breath while teasing an upcoming segment, “What’s THIS guy still doing around?”  The next day, it was nowhere to be found in the transcript.

In this case, the transcript reads “oooh,” but that doesn’t capture the sheer goofiness of Matthews’s exclamation, which was neither as startling—or as manly—as Howard Dean’s famous scream.  Maybe he felt something on his leg?

Get a grip, Chris, there’s a lot of time between now and the mid-term elections.  You might as well get used to it, things aren’t going your way.

Of course when GOP Chairman, Michael Steele, played the race card on Sunday you say nothing.

By the way, at the 1:27 mark on the protest video is the logo of the 912 project – a raised fist is also a logo for communism. What’s up with that? 🙂

Hmmm, deny/ignore the problem exist (Chris Matthews’ propensity to play the race card), then smear or discredit someone else to divert attention away from the topic…

I couldn’t care less about Chrissy Matthews, in 2000 he voted for George Bush. On May 1, 2003 when Bush gave his “Mission Accomplished” aboard the U.S Abraham Lincoln he declared “We are all Neocons now.”

Frankly, I have always found Chrissy Matthews terribly RUDE. I like to HEAR political guests’ and commentators’ responses. Chrissy doesn’t accommodate viewers like me. He’d rather “butt in” “cut off” “talk louder than” whomsoever dares try to respond. I think that “tingle” moment was the day his “inner bully” saw fit to come out of the closet. And yes, maybe Chrissy’s pudendum got a little puffy at the time, but since then, Chrissy Matthews sounds increasingly like a distressed and hysterical queen. The jury is out as to which Crissy is the REAL Chrissy – the current distressed and hysterical queen or the former closeted mano-a-mano type alpha male usually seen covering their faces as they leave the gay baths that just got busted.

There is only one word that starts with A that applies to Mathews but being in polite company and at least one idiot we cannot repeat it here. Also we all know who the idiot is of course.

As I said before, about the same time Jeff took over GE’s broadcasting division, most of MSNBC’s commentatiors went left of center. Those that didn’t succumb, luckily escaped into the rational world.

It is quite sad to watch a man fall apart on national TV; wheezing and gasping so hideously.

I hope “oohhooooeeeooooh!” makes it into the dictionary as a tribute to Matthews’ wit.

I used to occasionally watch Mathews back in 2003-2005.
I honestly never knew if he was a dem. or rep., which was a good thing.
It seems he made a conscious decision to take a hard left position over the past few years, perhaps, he thought to counter Fox, who in his mind were hardcore right wingers.
He was of course wrong on all accounts as his ever shrinking ratings would attest.
I suspect he’s too far gone now to ever reflect on where it all went wrong.

For a sixties radical whose only claims to fame are draft evasion in the Peace Corp, leftists only, and a Senator to an excellent Democrat Senator it amazes me anyone pays any attention the this effete statist.

The “racism” is emanating from the White House which is really no surprise to those of us who know how the Left play. It was laughable when the impeached hypocrite Bill Clinton played the race card for the same people who used it against him. You couldn’t make this nonsense up. Hillary and Michelle, great fans of Alinsky, have taught their men well as they have trouble with an original thought themselves.

Hey Obama! Gen. McChrystal wants you take his call so no more of our young and women die in vain. Can you reads something substantive instead of warmed over speeches written by George Soros’ puppets?

I have a 20 yr old grandson that at 18 was deployed green, almost straight out of Army boot camp to Iraq. He did his tour & returned safely. He is now preparing to visit us in Nov. & deploy to Afghanistan in Dec. I am scared to death & will not rest one night peacefully until he returns. I feel that we have the weakest Commander of our military ever in history. He has no plan of action, no goals & our soldiers are not being equipped to accomplish their mission. While Iran & China pursue their nuclear goals, Obama is cutting our missle defense programs. He is setting America up for failure & further attacks. Instead of making the safety of our troops & our country a priority, he is hell bent on destroying our country from within. I have never witnessed the type of destruction, chaos & division in America that I hear & read about daily. If this is the best leadership he can provide, he is definitely not capable of managing a war against terrorists that have no conscience & whose only goal is to kill us all in the name of their evil idol, Allah. Pack our troops up & bring them home, Obama. Today would not be soon enough.

I stopped watching Hardball ages ago! I could no longer tolerate Chris’ mostly one-sided discussion/debate and when he has an opposing view, he speaks over his guest’s voice and/or continually interrupts and cuts him or her off. The program is now totally nonsensical and unbearable to watch! Yes, he plays the race card at every opportunity and one must wonder why. I also wonder what exclusive white neighborhood he lives in and what exclusive and elite private white schools his children attended? I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a contrast to what he says and what he does, which is so very typical of many of the hypocritical wealthy Liberal elite. They preach one way and live another.

FOX is fairly even handed in there news reporting something the other news broadcast have not been in years. It appeared to me that the bias really excellerated after Bush beat the dolt Gore for office and got even worse after his defeat of the phony hero Kerry. Many younger people now have no idea what fair reporting is. But the most agregious thing in all my years were the lies told by Walter Cronkite in reference to the Tet Offensive playing it as a big victory for the North Vietnamese when in fact it was a very bad defeat the Vietcong never arose from that fefeat to be a credible threat again. I was pushing hard from the north to try and hook up with the Marines at the old capital city of Hue was in a 3 day running fire fight. When it was over slept for 44 hours.

Along with a lot of the “Divided States of America”, Chris has LOST it! I am SO tired of hearing about race. And by the way, Obama is half white too, in case you forgot.Talk about profiling & prejudice, this segment is at the top of the list. I am a “damn yankee”, one that came from the North to the South & never left. My ancestors gave their lives to abolish slavery. I have as many black friends as I do white. As a subcontractor, I employ my black friends. We work with our city & independent contractors to renovate poor black neighborhoods, with emphasis on helping citizens buy affordable new homes, upgrade their neighborhoods & their lives. Many Southerners including myself, both black & white, don’t like or trust Obama. It has nothing to do with his skin color, but with the fact that he associates with & called to service in his administration, some of the most corrupt & radical persons that any President in history ever has. Any politician ever elected has been held accountable by the public for their actions & have had their agendas scrutinized. When Obama is “off limits” because we will be called racist for opposing him, HE is the one playing the race card. I am SO tired of the medias love affair with him. They’ve lost all perspective & are out of touch with reality. It took two college kids & $3,000 to bring down the corrupt ACORN, catching them red handed offering services & housing for prostitution. Included in this were illegal aliens to be used as teen age sex slaves. Obama has endorsed ACORN & pre-election said there would be a place in his Presidency for ACORN to continue their work. When recently asked about the scandal he answered, (ad libbed) “ACORN who? We give them how much money? I didn’t know that. This is not a priority of mine” Did the other major news networks investigate ACORN when recent accusations of corruption were being brought to our attention by FOX? NO, they were too busy protecting Obama from the public that he works for. Wake up & start doing your job, instead of inciting hatred among our citizens. In conclusion, indicating that Sarah Palin was in any way a party to racial injustice is crazy. I think you’re all crazy & hope you continue to lose your audience & ratings!

Sorry but I have to disagree we need to send the troops that General McCrystal has requested and approved by Gen. Patreus and finish the job we started. If we do not we will be right back over there in a few years with more of our precious military dying for the same reasons we went there to begin with. There are problems but we can prevent the killers from using Afganistan to launch more attacks on our country and worse.

In reality, I know this is right. I took pride in the fact that we stood with the citizens of Iraq, freeing them from their evil dictator & helping them build a democrasy. Any time the terrorists are forced from occupation it brings us a step closer to our goal of eliminating them. My fear is that our current President has not indicated this is a priority of his, nor shown much strength or leadership in this area. I just think that without this, we will be fighting a losing battle. I know our battle is just & neccessary, I guess I just don’t have much faith in our current leaders.

Mary, thanks for your post! All of the FACTS you offered fit this “situation” to a T! Chris Matthews will soon be “history”, if he continues to play the “race card” re: Obama or any other issue, of which he tries so hard to MAKE a race issue. Obama, himself, was the first to play the “race card”, apparently in an attempt to divert attention of American citizens away from the REAL issues. Matthews and all others in the former “mainstream media” are desperately trying to “resurrect” their ratings on that one issue alone; and it’s NOT working. Most American citizens are now privy to the Obama administration’s arrogance, socialist policies, unconfirmed czars, anti-America actions, and Obama’s close association with Bill Ayers, George Soros, Hugo Chavez, the czars, and many other America-hating people – some of whom are terrorists. Most American citizens know those are the REAL problems in our country now – along with the birth certificate “mystery”, and WHY it wasn’t “solved” when it was first discovered that he is hiding his REAL birth certificate, as well as his school and medical records. Also, with astounding information about TIDES, APOLLO, SIEU, and ACORN (and their close ties with each other in their common bond and anti-America plots(including writing bills that are brought before OUR U. S. Congress)Glenn Beck has opened the eyes of many former apathetic and/or uninformed Americans who were duped by campaign promises, lies, and deceit. Now the “sleeping giant” has awaken; and we are asking questions and demanding answers. Glenn is naming names, and PROVING the truth of the information he presents pn videos of complicit individuals speaking their OWN words; so that his viewers and listeners are able to draw our own conclusions re: what’s really going on in our corrupt self-serving “government”. While the ratings of Chris Matthews and all other members of the FORMER mainstream media are sinking fast, Glenn Beck’s ratings are soaring. Why? Because, as always, America wants and loves the TRUTH; and now we know the promised “change” is about as far from the truth as anything CAN be! We don’t want America to be “fundamentally transformed”! WE love our country! Few Americans are still listening to the old “mainstream media” who are in the pockets of corrupt politicians. Glenn’s presentations of the TRUTH have brought about the NEW mainstram media, and they are us now-informed AMERICAN CITIZENS. The former MSM is now the FM (fringe media),who are basically being ignored, and for good reason.

I think General McCrystal is saying we need more troops– to do the job Obama wants done. The liberal line forever was that it was America’s fault that Afghanistan fell into chaos because we didn’t nation build after we helped the Soviets leave. Of course, it’s ALWAYS America’s fault, and liberals would always have done something different– just like they always prefer the war we aren’t fighting to the one we are.

Frankly, killing al Qaeda is the only interest we have in Afghanistan. Democrats keep saying “Afghanistan isn’t Iraq.” Well, a year ago, according to them, IRAQ wasn’t “Iraq” either. And while George Will’s proposal is not well thought out, I think the pattern to follow should be El Salvador– in other words, we have advisors and Special Forces who can kill bad guys and train the Army, but we don’t really care enough about what kind of friendly country they are as long as they are a friendly country. It worked in El Salvador without much American blood or treasure.

But, you have to have rules of engagement that allow the SEALs, etc, to kill the bad guys.

David, I don’t know how you can stand to watch Matthews. He’s always been a loud-mouthed, abrasive commentator- with an unpleasant voice and a disturbing way of simplifying every serious issue so that personality- or his cartoonish construing of personality- and the “original sins” of conservatives can be made to explain everything. I do think that you and other MSM watchers do a service, but to be nakedly self-centered, I’m glad it’s not me who has to suffer Lil’ Chris and the ever more odious Keith Olberman.
Just in case staunch liberals think conservatives can’t tolerate liberal giving their opinions, I’d offer Juan Williams as an example of someone conservatives have no trouble hearing out. Williams has none of the hatred and paranoia animating the MSNBC luminaries.

I am not annoyed at all there has always been interest in creating that security force especially by what is referred to as the Northern Alliance These are the people that assisted our Special Forces in driving out the Taliban in the first place. To leave this place to Bin Laden and the Taliban to reinstitute as a planning and staging ground for attacks on our country would be a very bad decision that we would pay dearly for in blood. Being an old soldier and vet I also do not like seeing the lives of my fellow soldiers wasted for nothing. They have been building a security force and Army just not fast enough.
