From the Pen of David Horowitz: September 29, 2009

September 29, 2009

In life, McCarthy was part of the Right.  In death, he has been possessed by body snatchers on the Left.  The apprehensions aroused by charges of “McCarthyism” are based on the Left’s assertion that there is a powerful and destructive impulse lurking just under the surface of our political life: a native fascism easily ignited and ready to rage dangerously out of control. It is an assumption not often questioned, although the evidence suggests that the opposite is true.  Arthur Miller’s efforts in The Crucible to portray it as a peculiarly American atavism notwithstanding, the history of McCarthyism actually shows how alien the witch-hunt mentality is to the American spirit and how superficial its hold on the American psyche.  Appearing in the extraordinary circumstances of the postwar period, McCarthyism was brief in its moment and limited in its consequences.  And it was complete in the way it was purged from the body politic. The Wisconsin senator’s strut on the stage ended in a crushing repudiation by his colleagues in the Senate and an enduring obloquy in the rogues’ gallery of American history, a position close to that of Benedict Arnold and a handful of other villains.  His enemies survived to be rehabilitated as martyrs and heroes of an American political “ nightmare”, while he himself is the only figure from that haunted era to suffer irreparable damnation.

Destructive Generation by Peter Collier and David Horowitz

This quote was submitted by Dan W. who noted:

I have long regarded DH’s Chapter Six of “Destructive Generation” as one of the most illuminating discussions of McCarthyism I have seen, including how the history has been distorted by the modern Left…. I think this passage  (plus one additional paragraph) gets to the core of the issue. Like “racist” these days, the casual use of the term is used by the Left today as a way to, as David said, “invoke cloture on debates that it doesn’t want to have”

    Can we start a new era of isms that relate to leftists activities like;
Obamaism= the feelings aquired when Presidents do the opposite of what they say
Polosism = the feelings aquired when suffering blinking fools
Goreism = the feelings aquired when a new tax is really my inconvenient truth

I’ve been grappling with the question “why do people on the left admire people I greatly dislike” i.e. Hiss, V. Jones, black panthers, cop killers, etc

And then I thought…for the Left it’s all about the means; the process of getting there. Outcome doesn’t matter.

McCarthy’s “means” for outing Communists to the Leftist is of much more concern to them than the fact that Communists were outed.

Same for “programs” – it matters not the outcome (bankrupt country, cesspool healthcare); it’s the “means” of getting there, control + micromanaging a huge aspect of our lives.

Come to think of it…The Left is all Communism…

After reading up about McCarthy and the Verona Project. The truth is he was right.

Thank you for pointing this out. McCarthy was only trying to expose the fact that there were communists in the Federal gov’t. He was correct then and he’d certainly be correct now.

The people who want to remember what “he did to them personally,” might want to look at the House Unamerican Committee, that I THINK was largely responsible for whatever “doing” to people was done.

Read Ann Coulter’s book about this. She encapsulates all the data quite nicely.

Read Ann’s book, but also read David Horowitz’s column about it:

“The trouble with Treason” – search later when is up

Ann makes it all the left’s fault that McCarthism and anti-communism have become bad words. Horowitz points out that McCarthy deserves some of the criticism he was and still is receiving.

America may not like witch-hunts, but it loves drama and icons….

McCarthy became an icon for destroying people’s lives by looking for an ideological connection between sometimes unrelated or otherwise harmless things.

It doesn’t matter how you want to remember him David. There will be some people who never forget what he did to them personally. I guess you want to smooth over the uglier part of his “legacy” because some of your work these days ventures into his territory.

Of course facts don’t really matter do they? I’m sure there were some butt-hurt British loyalists after the Revolutionary war also. The truth is our armor. This country is starting to wake up and grow up. Too long have we cared how those who covort with the enemies of all free people feel after they have had “a-whuppin”. And, by the way, we are the majority. Keep your handouts, poison pill legislations, and control tactics.

Stanlislav Levchenko, a KGB defector, was a guest on the Jim Bohannan Show in the late 80’s and said McCarthy’s cause was legitimate since the Soviets were trying to infiltrate all levels of government. I called in about the U.S. Peace Council which Arkady Shevchenko, the highest ranking defector ever, stated in his book, “Breaking With Moscow” and in person to me, that the World Peace Council started by the Soviets in 1949, was a “nest of KGB spies!” My question to Levchenko was about the SOVIET KGB AND COMMUNIST PARTY USA FRONTS LIKE THE U.S. PEACE COUNCIL, and he said it was an honor to have the KGB’s biggest front in the land of the enemy.

One of the U.S. Peace Council fronts directed out of CPUSA was CISPES, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador. The KGB FUNDED U.S. groups screamed “No Contra Aid” since that was used to fight against the Communists in Nicaragua. The Peace groups take credit for ending the Vietnam War so the KGB and CPUSA tried the same tactic in Central America. BUT, while the PEACE groups were screaming against the Contras, THEY WERE RAISING FUNDS, INCLUDING IN CHURCHES, FOR THE MARXIST FMLN REBELS SEEKING THE VIOLENT OVERTHROW OF EL SALVADOR. PEACE GROUPS AIDING IN WAR? HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS AIDING IN DEATH WHICH IS THE ULTIMATE ABUSE OF HUMAN RIGHTS?

The FMLN was run by Shafik Handal, the head of the CP of El Salvador.

Even today, when I bring up the role of the CPUSA, the radio host has seven seconds to push the disconnect button. I record the calls and many times they say “we lost you” and many other excuses.

THE COMMUNIST PARTY USA is just another party in our puralistic system. ALL parties have a position on every issue and they are openly questioned about it but THE CPUSA IS LEFT OUT OF PUBLIC DISCUSSION. WHY? WHY IS IT TABOO TO BRING THEM UP? JUST LIKE DAVID HOROWITZ’S ARTICLE TODAY. IT IS TABOO.

DURING THE 80’S, the KGB and our CPUSA fronts like CISPES were recruiting university students INCLUDING BARRACK OBAMA! Last week a poster wrote a comment to me about Obama’s article he wrote while at Columbia. IT WAS ABOUT FRONTS, INTERVIEWS WITH LEADERS, AND ABOUT CISPES, A KNOWN KGB/CPUSA FRONT! Rev. Wright, in one of his rants said, “our brothers and sisters in El Salvador.” THAT IS A DIRECT CONNECTION TO A KGB/CPUSA FRONT WHO PREACHED LIBERATION THEOLOGY IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND WRIGHT’S INSPIRATION TO BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY WHICH IS RACISM TO THE CORE!

I left out HILLARY CLINTON. Google Comrade “Hillary and add Marxist FMLN.” SHE GAVE MONEY TO THE FMLN IN THE 80’S!

Then Hillary sides with Zelaya and dismisses Honduran laws and their constitution which emboldened Zelaya who is now inciting rebellion which will lead to real military action to stop a CIVIL WAR?

I don’t know who first said this, but I agree: “There is only one thing wrong with McCarthyism, it gave anti-communism a bad name.”

For more about the KGB, GRU, CPUSA, and Communists in the United States and Canada, read the works of John Haynes & Harvey Klehr. Their latest, SPIES: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, is written with Alexander Vassiliev, former KGB agent.

I saw him being interviewed and at the end, he said he would never betray his country. He said not to call him a traitor but a defector. I can guarantee that this man is a double agent and is still working as a KGB agent!!! He’s actually like all closet Communists here in America: They slam Capitalism while they get rich off of it! (Michael Moore comes to mind!”

One of the worst black eyes this country has ever rendered to a patriot is the treatment of McCarthy after the commission’s outstanding job of tracking down Communists infiltrating our government. Robert Kennedy, who was also on the commission, remained friends with McCarthy until he died, when he attended McCarthy’s funeral.

On the other hand, Eisenhower wasn’t astute enough, or didn’t care enough about the country, to believe McCarthy and rid our government of the people in governmental positions who helped deform this once great country. It was just easier to go with the flow.

Everyone should read M. Stanton Evans “Blacklisted by History” about Joe McArthy. It amazes me how so many people “know the whole truth about him” when a lot of the material was kept secret for 50 years.
I am still waiting for Sen. Tydings’ recording of Sen. Joe giving an exact number of communists…oh wait, he admitted under oath he never had a recording and that it didn’t exist. Either way it doesn’t stop leftists from ripping the man a new one… Talk about a guy “taking one for the team”. How dare someone try to stop communists from working at the State Dept….what was wrong with that guy????

I think of my little grandmother. She was outraged, incensed, concerned about the communist menace in the 1950’s. The rest of the family had been to college and/or had various other ideas, and so they wrote her off as being not very bright and being concerned with something that just wasn’t cool.

I love it that she was vindicated by the Venona papers and all the many testimonies of the times.

One thing most people do not realize is that at the time of the McCarthy investigations the ‘Progressives” already controlled almost all Government Bureaucracies to the extent that most of the figures that came under investigation, would resign from say State and secretly end up in Defense. They stayed in Government…

The destruction of Senator Joe McArthy was an inside job — a media attack launched against him by powerful Americans. Google “Operation Mockingbird” to see a list of the so-called American journalists who destroyed him in the media.

Missoula, MT is planning to put up a plaque honoring Elizabeth Gurley Flynn for bringing ‘free speech’ to the country! She was a communist (chairwoman of the party in the US) , even after the atrocities of the Stalinist and Maoist regimes, she died in the USSR and was given a state funeral in Red Square. People in this community, either ignorant or careless of the attrocities of communism, seem to be oblivious to the evil they are courting, as is all those who align themselves with the left. The communists use free speech in the US as a means for taking that freedom from us. The danger is frighteningly more palpable daily.

Early on in my career I worked with a man he was an FBI agent on a case he was much older than I and was a case building phenom. He was past retirement age but simply wanted to work most of his work was in the courtroom by that time. He got me interested in McCarthy he also had reams of records his take was that McCarthy was absolutely right on practically everything he brought before the house committee. He also thought that he was the imperfect messenger but was courageous. I know that Tail Gunner was right and wanted the best for America. After reading the Verona Papers I am also convinced this gentleman was one of the sources for the book but would not admit it. It went with him to his grave.

I was a young man when “Tail-gunner Joe” chaired those famous (Infamous?) hearings.

This I can state with the certainty of experience: With few exceptions, virtually everything you read or heard about Joe McCarthy was written or spoken by the people he was investigating.

It brings to mind something I remember from Orwell’s “1984.” Everyone recalls the most famous quote: “Big Brother is watching you”, but this one below is apropos to the McCarthy phenomenon.

“Those who control the past, ran the party slogan, control the future–those who control the present control the past.”
