When Man Plays God

When ultrasound technology (sonogram) became readily available to physicians, it was a boon to the medical profession, which quickly realized its practical applications. Relatively inexpensive, portable and un-invasive, ultrasound scans soon became one of the first tests to be performed in the routine examination of a patient’s heart, liver, lymph nodes, etc.

Women, especially, benefit from sonograms, whose images can identify the causes of pelvic bleeding, menstrual problems, cysts and cancerous cells. And of course the general monitoring of the health of both baby and mother during pregnancy have made the sonogram an invaluable diagnostic tool.

But there is a flip side to this coin — the abuse of ultrasound technology (or of any technology, for that matter).

In societies that are culturally biased against women, the sonogram can lead to eugenics, genocide and murder. In many parts of the Islamic world, for example, the birth of a daughter can bring extreme financial hardship to a family, and the early knowledge of the existence of a female fetus developing inside the womb has led many a couple to either abort the pregnancy or hide knowledge of the pregnancy until birth, whereupon the baby girl was left on some hillside to die of exposure.

In countries with a tradition of honoring the birth of a son and lamenting the birth of a daughter, such as Communist China, the practice of female infanticide has reached new heights. China’s deadly (for females) combination of its one-child policy on the one hand, and a longstanding preference for sons on the other, has led to extremely high abortion rates for girls; as a result, in some regions of the country the living population consists of 120 males for every 100 females.

In the year 1990, it is estimated that more than 100,000 ultrasound scanners were in use in China, and that more than 1.7 million female babies went “missing” that year; the number has grown steadily higher since then. While doctors in China are officially banned from telling parents the gender of the baby, they can usually be bribed into providing the information.

In the United States, this screening process is about to be brought to a whole new level.

According to a report this weekend on Fox and Friends, there are now fertility clinics in New York and Los Angeles that will allow prospective parents–for a $5,000 fee–to have a mother’s embryo removed, tested, and then implanted back into the womb. This will not only allow for the examination and detection of defects in the gene sequence that may indicate the likelihood that the person will someday develop diseases such as Alzheimer’s, but will also enable the parents to reject those embryos that don’t meet their standards.

DNA microarray, as the process is called, will enable parents to scan their offspring’s genetic code, allowing them to customize whatever attributes they wish for their children — from eye and hair color, to height, to athleticism, to singing ability.

The potential for abuse here is enormous. These “designer babies” will bring us closer to Nazi and eugenicist ideals than ever before.

In this ugly yet entirely plausible scenario, it is only a matter of time before governments begin to explore the potential for dictating what their populations should look like.

Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood (America’s largest abortion mill), was the living embodiment of such a mindset. A devoted eugenicist, Sanger advocated forced sterilization — of the poor and the feeble-minded” in particular, who she believed were likely to produce “subnormal” offspring — for the purpose of improving society’s overall gene pool. At a March 1925 international birth-control event in New York City, Sanger advocated — for the “salvation of American civilization” — the sterilization of those “unfit” to procreate — most notably Catholics.

Sanger’s commitment to eugenic “sexual science” dovetailed seamlessly with her Marxist vision. While she had been heartened by the success of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, she doubted that a revolution for a new communist order in the U.S. could be carried out by a proletariat class of limited intellectual capacity. Thus she sought to elevate the quality of the overall gene pool by means of eugenics. Sanger wrote in The Pivot of Civilization:

“In pointing out the limitations and fallacies of the orthodox Marxian opinion, my purpose is not to depreciate the efforts of Socialists aiming to create a new society, but rather to emphasize what seems to me to be the greatest and most neglected truth of our day: unless sexual science is incorporated … and the pivotal importance of birth control is recognized in any program of reconstruction, all efforts to create a new world and a new civilization are foredoomed to failure.”

      Do what they already do, drug it so it won’t cry and put it in a closet or unused room till they die.

    Lets face it, our society has hardened its heart towards life. Whether at the beginning in the womb or the end with our elderly. We are no better than those who sacrificed children in The Valley of Gehenna….Both of my children are adopted….I thank God that these two birth mothers, who made the decision to save lives, had the courage and the counseling to do so.
    Why compound one sin with a more evil sin, taking an innocent life.

    Let us recall that eugenics was practiced around the world prior to WWII.

    The U.S. forcibly sterilized around 64,000 people between 1907 and 1963.

    There have always been those who believe man can perfect himself and the drive to push religious faith out of the public square is an attempt to force public policy and laws towards a eugenics mindset.

    Legalizing the use of birth control was the first step towards the slippery slope to designer babies since it was the first time in human history women had a certain amount of control over human birth. Controlling the number of children one had led to the mentality that promiscuity could be practiced with little to no consequence and enshrined the idea that personal liberty trumps personal responsibility when human children are involved. This, of course, led to the legalization of abortion and all of the no-fault divorce laws, both of which led to the rally by homosexuals for the right to marry.

    Add to that the technological and scientific advances in the creation of tools such as ultrasound and drugs for birth control and abortion and penile disfunction, IVT, and genetic testing, and society is ready to discard all humans that are less than perfect.

    In other words, the self-evident truth that we have the God-created right to life has been discarded and replaced by the self-evident truth that life can and must be manipulated to serve the self-interest right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

    “And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God. That they are not to be violated but with his wrath. Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”

    When man plays God, God says “O.K. You think you can do it better? Go for it.” We have wars across the globe, economic collapse, rampant immorality, corruption, and on and on. That is not to say that God causes calamities; he simply allows man to “play God”. Clearly, we are not up to the task.

    Ethically this is wrong. We shouldn’t be changing the very thing that makes us unique from every one else. It’s great that medical science can do this, but in my opinion, it should only be used to treat genetic abnormalities, such as down’s syndrome, MD, Spina Bifida, and congenital defects such as genetic asthma, and maybe hearing and eyesight.

    I find it odd, that where they wanted to kill babies to harvest stem cells, now they want to tweak the gene code and make them super-human.

    It’s not up to us to play god.

    Wow, talk about paranoid leaps of absurdity. It is hard to know where to begin addressing the nonsense in that bit of fear-mongering.

    Could it be pointing out that people able to casually afford such things tend to have fewer children in the first place, thus already selecting themselves out of the gene pool?

    Could it be that an ethnic or cultural group choosing only male children is effectively breeding said group out of the gene pool as well?

    Could it be absolutely no basis to assume a private screening choice will be automatically required by the government?

    Could it be that not everyone using such a technique will want some Nazi poster child for a baby? Particularly if the government does spontaneously decide to subsidize it for the purpose of screening for genetic defects?

    Or could it just be that by presuming to pontificate on the morality of medical procedures chosen by others, those doing so are presuming to play at divinity? Hubris and hypocrisy joined together to create a more repressive authority than the fear-mongering referenced National Socialists or Marxists ever managed.

    Well then:
    “If we give in to fear-mongering on this issue, who knows what medical procedure, or indeed recreational activity, will these would-be quasi-Nazi guardians of our genetic diversity seek to terrify us into banning in their quest to control our lives and bodies?”

    All babies are a gift from God and should be treated as such. Even the mentally challenged have someone who loves them and they also feel love for others. The bright side of this is knowing that the ones who advocate this type of behavior will one day have to face their Creator and will be punished in a Lake of Fire!
