The Horses are Out, Close the Barn Door!

October 14, 2009

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Moscow, meeting with our Russian “allies,” to talk about the Iranian nuclear problem. Getting Russia’s cooperation on sanctions against the Iranians was the main topic of concern.

Not surprisingly, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the real power in the Kremlin, wasn’t at home to meet with her—he is in China, on more pressing matters: negotiating a huge trade deal with the communist Chinese. Clinton had to settle for separate meetings with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Dmitry Medvedev.

Why did Putin snub Clinton?

Why not? Putin has already gotten the one concession from the administration of Barack Obama that he wanted more than anything else—the dropping of U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.

Last month, you will recall, Obama unilaterally dropped plans to build a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe to protect our allies against Iranian missiles. This came as a complete shock to all, but to the Russians, it was a gift from above. The construction of that shield had been a worry for the Russians ever since former President George Bush first proposed it, and one could only imagine the look of disbelief on Putin’s face when he first heard the news that Obama was not only backing away from it, but that nothing was expected of Russia in return!

Because of this generous act, then, the expectations of the Obama administration over Clinton’s visit were naturally quite high, as this is the first high-level contact with the Russians since Obama’s missile shield reversal. Surely, in light of this act of magnanimity, the Russians could now be counted on to support U.S. efforts to strengthen sanctions against Iran?

So, were the meetings productive? Are the Russians now on board when it comes to hitting Iran with stricter sanctions?

In a word, nyet!

Russia, said Lavrov, believes that stronger sanctions against Iran would be “counter-productive” and will not support them (Thank you for visiting, Secretary Clinton, and don’t let the door hit you in the bum on the way out).

Why would it have been otherwise?

Obama had already given up his main bargaining chip last August. If history has taught us anything in dealing with Russia, it’s that you NEVER negotiate with the Russians from a position of weakness. NEVER.

Did our Secretary of State get the message?

Apparently not, for she then goes on to weaken our position further in a groveling gesture that gives away even more!

From Putin’s comrades at Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now! comes the following, unbelievable report:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Moscow today for talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The Russian newspaper Kommersant is reporting the US has privately agreed to stop publicly criticizing Russia’s human rights record in return for Russian cooperation on confronting Iran and so-called missile defense.

Back in China, Putin is undoubtedly toasting his good fortune with his Chinese hosts.

There are only two reasonable interpretations of this adminstration’s foreign policy – either they are deliberately undermining US interests (as Krauthammer recently argued) or they are dangerously naive and incompetent.

I’d say a bit of both – some of them may really believe that thugocracies like Putin’s merry band of neo-aparatchiks will respond to olive branches, while others see themselves as “holding America accountable to the world” for her past sins of colonialism, imperialism, etc.

It’s certainly not astonishing to see this sort of world view from a man whose pastor preached “God Damn America” – a man who surrounds himself with a motley grab-bag of domestic terrorists, race-baiting street preachers, Marxists and fellow-travelers in every other failed ideal of the 20th Century Left.

Whether you believe Obama wants to harm American interests or whether you believe that he sees his disastrously one-sided and naive foreign policy initiatives as his way of helping America, his world view informs his foreign policy – one which seems to draw him toward Chavez and Putin, and away from Britain and Israel.

And in either case, it’s an effort we could well do without.

She supports him. If she didn’t she would resign.

All I know is that I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in Hillary’s hotel room on the night that she knew for sure that BHO had stolen the nomination from her…. I’ve listened to the most foul language from Marine Gunnies and Navy Chiefs, and I’m certain that it wouldn’t come close to the vile filth that came out of her mouth that nite…

I think she took the job at state hoping that it would leave her in the best possible position to make a move if BHO really had a meltdown, which I’m positive she’s doing everything in her power to facilitate…. but BHO was smart enough to realize that and has therefore placed her in a position where he can exercise tight control over her.

BHO is certainly doing more damage to the country than she would have, however when it comes down to pure venal arrogance and nastiness, Hillary still has no equal…

Once again, the naive and inexperienced Obama expected that if he played “nice” he would get something in return. He does not live in the real world. The Russians have not yet finished selling the nuclear material, technology and assistance to Iran. Does Obama really believe that there will be negotiations? How is it that someone with a Harvard diploma has absolutely no wisdom or common sense? He obviously has no experience with school yard bullies outside of the Chi-town mobsters he embraces. Mr. Obama, there are real monsters in the world and they smell blood in the water with your weakness and inexperience.

Comrade Obama’s adminstration is show how dumb they really are. Hillary doesn’t have the smarts to be Sec of State, it was a nice place to put her and isolate her. Their Russian friends are screwing the world and this adminstration is not making it known to the public. The Russian government is getting ready to sell a nuclear reactor to Burma. Here what we have to know about Burma. Burma has uranium mines, and is working with the peaceful North Korean government on a tunnel complex to hide their nuclear weapons labs and factories that are going to be built. Remember that North Korean ship that the Navy was trailing. It’s designation was Burma but it didn’t make it. Burma will be able to make U235 from their uranium with a Nuclear reactor the Russians are going to sell them. Let’s see Russia is covering Iran’s back on their nuclear program and now their getting involved with Burma’s nuclear program, and there is talk of the Russians and the Iranians help Hugh Chavez with a startup nuclear program. It all follows a pattern that is being repeated over and over. Where are the European outrage. There is none because they don’t know how to be outraged. Only this time the goog old US won’t be there to pull their chestnuts out of the fire.
