From the Pen of David Horowitz: October 29, 2009

October 29, 2009

I was the scion of socialists and Communists, of Jews estranged from Judaism who pursued ideals beyond the limits of its community and traditions, of revolutionaries who pursued fulfillment in a liberated future beyond the confines of the societies and nations that defined the human present. When I was nine, I remember marching with my parents in a Communist May Day Parade in New York City. The year was 1948 and Communist political forces directed by Moscow and backed by the Red Army were taking control of Eastern Europe. In February, the Communists had overthrown the government of Czechoslovakia. In March, President Truman went before Congress to mobilize America’s forces for the anti-Communist battles that loomed ahead. It was the beginning of the Cold War and our May Day parade was conceived as an act of political defiance.

In a way I suppose it was natural in the 30s and 40s for estranged Jews to adopt socialist and communist theology apparently advocating the replacement of capitalism with ‘hope’ and ‘change’ into a more liberal, fairer, freedom loving society. So it is hard to criticize your parents, David. But at least you have matured and are now able to combat the Obama process of reversing a free society into a newer, more insidious anti-American, pro-islamic, peasant version of old style Stalinism.

“… Jews to adopt socialist and communist theology …”

For an excellent analysis of the motivation for this as well as the peace-at-any-price Jews in Israel see “The Oslo Syndrome” by Kenneth Levin, a clinical psychiatrist.

A few years ago I did read “Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer” by Edward Jay Epstein. Young Armand had parents who were also enthralled by the socialist ideal, — so much so that he was named him in honor of the symbol of socialism. After the October Revolution they packed up and left for Russia and the revolution. Armand became a useful tool in the spread of the communist “ideal” in the United States, Lenin’s “Capitalist Prince”.

What was the attraction for so many Americans to socialism in the early part of the 20th Century?

Hammer’s, or Lenin’s funds, actually, were used to influence politics in Washington where he soon “owned” Al Gore, Sr. I’ve often wondered why info on Armand Hammer isn’t included in Discover the — he had plenty of adverse influence on the country.

It seems to be a common thread when Jews came to America fm euro countries as well as Russia where they were persecuted, they didn’t want to see it repeated so they went overboard to side on the left, liberal, socialist, socialism, etc.. that bled into causes such as the ones aforementioned as well as the A.C.L.U. what i believe they are now starting to realize as Mr.Horowitz did is this; they are being used at times, they’re not necessarily being respected while they lend their name, time, prestige to the effort. I saw things from the left because my history was a father w/ jewish parents fm Russia, who wanted to start off with this wide eyed belief that the rich were the evil ones, the poor were there to be exploited.
Well it took quite a few decades to realize that poor and homeless don’t have jobs to offer, and the rich aren’t always exploitative, no more than the four unions I served in. As for the politicians proclaiming to represent the ‘ po folk ‘ now i look at it with more suspicion than before. I hope there will be a paradigm shift in this country to realize our strength as a free nation, not a socialistic, marxist leaning country and all that entails.

Your assumptions are as close to the truth as one can be. Many Jews accepted Communism as a ticket away from Fascism and out of Hitlers death camps. Who would blame them at the time? Now, many of them are in the US and teaching in our universities and working for far left organizations like the ACLU. I don’t recall the poor Soviet Jews coming here, only the educated elite. Many of them came here to escape religious persecution about 20 years ago and we had no idea who they were politically or what their intentions were. How were we to know if they were working for the communists for infiltration into our government and to destroy capitalism?
I agree with David Horowitz and his notion of what is going on and why. I am not, in any way, anti Jew. I am firmly behind Israel and their fight for survival.

“What was the attraction for so many Americans to socialism in the early part of the 20th Century?”

My father (born in 1912) had told me on many occasion that those who migrate towards Marxism/Socialism were conceived in jealousy and raised in envy.

His opinion had developed while growing up during the first half of the last century and it certainly fits the overwhelming majority of the leftist voters that I know today.

I would prefer ‘conceived in poverty, raised in psychotic envy’, which was expressed in hatred.

“Jews estranged from Judaism” In my opinion, that’ is the source of the problem. Belief in radical leftist ideology is as a religious cult, one that is inherently evil. Instead of following the tenets of Judaism, they are proponents of an amoral system responsible for the murder of hundreds of millions.
