“What Boobs are in Charge of the Health of my Boobs?”
“This is how rationing begins. This is the little toe in the edge of the water. This is when you start getting a bureaucrat between you and your physician. This is what we have warned about.” -Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.)
Breast exams are now recommended only for women over fifty! Does the Left still think we were wrong to worry about health care rationing? It has already begun, even before the government gets their hands on our health care. And as a son of a woman who is dying from stage IV breast cancer I am furious.
This week a government panel of doctors (none of whom were oncologists by the way) came out with new recommendations for women and mammograms. They now recommend that women no longer get breast exams until they are 50, and then get them every two years instead of every year. These new recommendations are at odds with the American Cancer Society which continues to tell women (as it has for 20 years) to get a mammogram starting at 40 and to do it every year.
These new guidelines were issued by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. Their recommendations are used by some insurance companies and Medicare to determine what they will cover. Did you miss that? Medicare uses this group to say what they will cover. So without a doubt the new government run health care will use these ideas to ration health care.
Even CNN, which isn’t known for calling out this administration covered this one with suspicion. Here’s Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room with Wolf and Jack Cafferty:
This advisory panel actually is recommending that women get screened less, because the cost isn’t worth the relatively low number of women whose lives are saved by earlier and more frequent mammograms. What is the value of those lives? As Cafferty quotes one doctors:
“My patients tell me they can live with a little anxiety and distress, but they can’t live with a little cancer.”
Even Wolf Blizter points out that the Obama administration is not totally rejecting these suggestions.
“I was surprised, because in the interview I just did with Kathleen Sebellius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, she did not flatly reject these recommendations from the Task Force. She said, you know what, check with your doctor.”
CNN gives us some viewer response, including one from a lady named Andrea who wrote,
“What boobs are in charge of the health of my boobs?”
At 63 years old my mom found out she had stage IV breast cancer. Our family learned the cancer had spread all throughout her body, and for the last year and a half cancer has eaten away her bones. She went through radiation and chemotherapy to no avail. Now she lives on her back in a bed in a skilled nursing facility. She is like that 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our family has watched her deteriorate, and every day we have with her is a gift from God. However, I don’t want to see women in their 40s and 50s going through what my mom and our family is going through.
Government-run health care is obviously going to lead to rationing care, more disease, and higher death rates. These are a bunch of boobs indeed.
