TDB’s Tina Brown Explains: Palin’s Confidence Based on Ignorance

November 27, 2009

I missed this earlier this week, as did most other conservative bloggers, but it seems that MSNBC once again enabled a Palin-basher to spew her hatred of the former Alaska governor on national television.

Tina Brown is founder and editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast website and a convinced Leftist. Needless to say, she also hates Palin’s guts, which automatically makes her one of MSNBC’s all-time favorite bloggers.

“Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski pointed out that Palin is closing in on President Barack Obama in the polls. Does this mean she is a viable candidate in 2012, they wondered? Brown’s answer:

What people are responding to is that great vitality, that confidence – it doesn’t matter that the confidence is based on a kind of total ignorance. The fact is that there is a vitality about her that people like.

Now, I’m not American, but even I am annoyed by Brown’s lack of respect for Palin and the American people. Sure, she may have made some mistakes last year and, truth be told, she didn’t always handle difficult questions well, but to label her – and indirectly her supporters – “ignorant” is both disrespectful and wrong.

If Palin was even half as uninformed as Brown and her ilk pretend, she would not have been as successful a governor of Alaska as she has been. There was a reason more than 80% of Alaskans approved of her handling of the job, when she became Senator John McCain‘s running mate last year. And that reason was that she was good at what she did. Have you ever heard of a total ignoramus who was a great governor nonetheless? Right, me neither.

But that doesn’t prevent fake feminists such as Brown from insulting one of the most successful women in America today. Brown’s recent insults only reinforce my belief that the Left fears Palin, because it sees her as an apostate — an Uncle Tom, if you will. They don’t hate and despise her because she’s not intelligent enough for their taste – because she is very intelligent indeed - but because she’s conservative. As usual, that and nothing else is the real problem of a prominent Palin-hater.

There is also good news by the way: the more Brown et al. insult Palin, the more conservatives like myself will rise up to defend her. Ironically, Leftists are actually uniting the Right by continuing their smear campaign. When push comes to shove, the Left really is the Right’s best friend.

To be fair, Palin is in many ways vastly ignorant. That’s a good thing when she possessed equally vast amounts of determination and common sense and when most accepted knowledge is of how to best do things wrong or badly.

Give me an ignorant person with principles, drive, and common sense wisdom over the educated fool or villain any and every day of the week. ;)

You know, now that I reread your post with a little more care, I see what you are saying. So I should tell you I’m sorry for my criticism. If Palin is ignorant in comparison to what passes for knowledge these days, then let her be ignorant.

      Jonolan,

I don’t agree with your term “vastly ignorant” as Palin is not. Yes, she lacks experience in some areas but, as you say, she more than makes up for it in instinct, values, and heart.

In spite of Sarah Palin’s shortcomings, she’s real, she is representative of America (as Obama is not), and above all, I TRUST her.

I believe that TRUST is what is feuling Palin-mania.

Michael your analysis is right on…the left hates Palin beacuse she is not from an ivy league school, likes hunting, has five children, does not personally support abortion etc. All the things the lefties oppose. They have the view that they fought for the woman’s rights movement and the woman who benefits should agree with them and when she doesnt support their lefty agenda they vilify her

The daily beast is a smear site. I always find lots of name calling, half truths, and innuendo and almost never a piece of valuable information I can verify.

Interesting that leftist women have so much self loathing that they make sexist attacks against women who would dare stand up to them.

Brown couldn’t hang in a serious policy discussion with Sarah Palin.

FACT: At election time, Sarah Palin had five years more experience in elective office then Barack Obama. Palin brought down a massive corruption machine that involved energy companies and the Alaska Republican Party. In fact Alaska’s corruption was so bad before she cleaned it up that only Chicago, New Orleans and New Jersey were worse.

FACT: Palin played the crucial role in sending people in her own party to justice, fined or forced from office. She forced through new ethics laws and totally reformed the bidding, contracts and appropriations process that was wracked with cronyism. Obama was a long term member of the most corrupt political machine in the country and did nothing to clean it up.

FACT: Palin was a very popular city councilman, and mayor who oversaw the tremendous growth of Wasilla from a village to the fourth largest city in the state and helped found its police department and all of the modern city services the city enjoys now.

FACT: Palin took on her own incumbent governor and defeated him, stopped many wasteful appropriations, sold the governor’s jet, fired the personal chef, expanded state services while cutting the state budget and sent more money home to the Alaska citizens.

Fact: Even with four to five kids trailing along with her she cut Governor’s expenses from the previous governor by 80%.

FACT: The Alaska Governor gets regular national security briefings and has a role in defense policy because of the unique position Alaska is in our national defense.

FACT: Sarah Palin is a recognized authority on energy policy.

Speaking of energy policy, Mr. “Green Jobs” Obama may have just noticed that the last solar panel producer in the United States just had to close because the cost of doing business in America is too high, especially the price of government which the Democrats are furiously trying to make even higher.

FACT: Sarah Palin is a recognized authority on energy policy.

Yes, and as such, and with her quick wit, energy and charisma, perhaps we really COULD reclaim the respect of the rest of the world. A strong national security policy surely wouldn’t hurt that cause either… One can only give help and demand respect from a position of strength. I’m not a total Sarah Palin fan, but I do think she shows the most backbone of any politician I’ve seen in a long time (perhaps even since Reagan). I have high hopes for her future development. Another Iron Lady on the world scene would be a fine thing. Go Sarah.

I also hate Sara Palin and what she stands for, she is an idiot of the first class. She is also a hypocrite because she says one thing and practices another with here own family. Anybody that preaches family values and then lets her 15 year old daughter get pregnant is a hypocrite. She has job or cannot support herself and is probably getting welfare from the State of Alaska. The even kicked Levi Johnson out after the election so he wouldn’t contact with there daughter or the baby. She quit her job as the Governor of Alaska and she is the epitome of being a quitter unless it brings big bucks to her. Or the other angle is the Peter Principle of which one gets promoted to there point of incompetence. If the Republican party wanted to give something away during the campaign they have helped someone that is homeless and need some help to get back on there feet. That someone should have been a single mother with two or three children to raise and gotten her a job and some clothes so she could go to the interviews to gat that job. The $100,000 spent on Palin’s Wardrobe is rediculous when she probably had the clothes already being that she was a governor of a state.

    • November 28, 2009 7:41 pm

Indeed you hate Sarah Palin. This was the only contextually accurate thing you said.

You hate everything she stands for you said.

Ok so lets see. She rooted out one of the biggest corruption rings in the country and brought it to an end and wiped out the Alaska Republican old boy machine to do it.

So you are for more corruption, because as you said, you are against what she stands for.

Sarah Palin cut the expenses of the governors office by 80% over her predecessor. So obviously you want more tax dollars going to comfort politicians.

Palin sent more money home to the citizens while cutting the Alaska budget while maintaining state services. So you are against government efficiency.

If Palin didn’t stand up for her values she and Bristol would have had an abortion. Here I believe you are being honest because I am quite confident that a modern women who chose to have 5 kids and no abortions truly offends you. Abortion is after all, the sacrament of the extreme leftist church.

Palin left the governors chair for obvious reasons, she was going into her lame duck session in the legislature while people like you were exploiting a loophole in the state ethics law that was costing the state million of dollars investigating bogus ethics complaints. Palin also wanted to take on Obama directly and couldn’t do that from Alaska.

On the other hand, Obama was a do nothing state senator who voted present 130 plus times, Obama was a do nothing US Senator who started running for president shortly after he got in the Senate by sleezy means (Jack Ryan). As a US Senator Obama had no significant legislation, was drunk on earmark spending and held exactly ZERO hearings for the subcommittee he chaired. So in other words, Obama quit being a state senator and a US Senator and just chose to milk it for the paycheck.

The money spent on her clothes for the campaign was campaign money and the clothes were donated to charity afterwards. Most of the clothes she never saw because they had to buy the same outfits in several different sizes because they weren’t sure as to her exact size.

By the way you sexist bigot, women are higher maintenance with clothes than men are, so this is in reality nothing more than an attack on women who dare run for office.

Obama spent $293,000 PER HOUR in the month of October and took illegal overseas campaign contributions…. but that is ok because he is male right?

Your hate is typical, but it pales in comparison to your ignorance, which you are obviously very proud of.

Craig Close..I started not to comment because your mind seems set already..but I will. I will not reply to all of your clap-trap statements, because let’s face it, you are an idiot if you believe all that you wrote. Just to cover a few,(1) As to her pregnant daughter and her stand on family values, did your parents have family values? If so, did you get their permission before you had sex?? Doubt it!! (2) You assume that she is on welfare. Where is the proof?? She got a $1.7million advance on her book and has since sold over 300,000 with the publisher planning to print around 1.5 million more. I don’t believe she would qualify for welfare. (3) Levi Johnson left because he couldn’t accept the responsibility of fatherhood, and though reconciliations have been attempted, he wants no part of it. (4) You really outdo yourself with the quitter comment of unless she sees “big bucks”. If this was why, then why would she need or want Alaskan welfare?? She resigned because of the frivilous lawsuits which she had to fight against. Unlike most other states, Alaska provides no funds for anyone in office and she was inundated with junk suits which cost her personally over $1.5 million. She felt that she could not do her job as governor and spend so much time in court. (5..and I quit with this one) Her campaign wardrobe was for the most part loaned to her or donated to her. The loans were returned and the donated things were given to charity along with the very few things which were purchased. I do hope that you learned from this…or do you just throw dirt and run??

There is something comical about Palin bashers, but at the same time tragic for all. They are the same people who, when asked during the Presidential campaign: “Tell me just one thing that OBAMA has done, just one?” got a blank stare on their face then stood silent and bewildered. However there were some few who might have ventured the bold response: “Oh Yah! Well what about Hope & Change?” Really thoughtful folks, eh?

The 2010 elections look like the Republicans will take the House and 5-8 seats in the Senate and will freeze all of Obama’s initiatives.

By 2012, our deficits will be overwhelming. Even if we tax all income above $75K at 100%, we will only raise $550 billion — chump change in the face of trillion dollar deficits.

If Palin stays the course of her conservative positions, she will be viewed as the “stop the insanity – back to basics” candidate and Obama will be positioned as a failed experiment, not to be repeated.

Sarah Palin’s book has sold probably 1 million copies by now, thousands line up to get a book signed, and any event that she attends is filled to maximum capacity. Palin has common sense, and a great deal of first hand knowledge as to how things actually work, both in the private sector and in politics. She is not the cardboard cutout that we typically see propped up in front of a TV camera, she is a real, honest to goodness person. True, she hasn’t mastered the DC ability to spew out thousands of words which mean absolutely nothing, but then again, I hope she doesn’t learn that.

Tina Brown on the other hand, probably couldn’t fill a tiny coffee shop with people who are willing to listen to her say anything. The fact that she appears on the low rated MSNBC shows gives me an idea of how big a crowd she’d attract.

It is heartening to see so many Palin supporting comments. The
revolting left will tear at her as long as she is on the political
scene. The sorry part of her detractors is that they have no
candle to hold up to her, only darkness and thus see nothing.
I admire her accomplishments. For ten years I sat on a City Council
with the last two as Mayor, small city and big problems. Fighting
the State Government, County Government and wealthy business
interests all the time to protect the citizenry from being
trashed by jobbery , well it’s a long story, I prevailed.
Being in the right is what counts, people do not miss that.

My point is that unless you are similarly experienced in what
she must have gone through, the stress is enormous, the personal
attacks withering but she has come out on top and is doing fine.
She has and enormous accomplishment, enormous. American voters
were not understanding, to used to not paying attention and
giving time to thought. Obama promised smooth and easy answers,
one liners which have proven out to be one lie on top of another.
He being a shuck and jive snake oil salesmen, not to degrade the
snakes but hey what a con, that he was not seen for what he was
by the majority of voters just put the screws to possibly four
years of American life. Maybe there are enough cogent thinkers
available to make the difference and prepare to get us out from
under the pile of debris that is being laid on us. Obama is just
one man and one on one he looses to Sarah Palin in a big way.
Sarah Palin has earned our respect, Obama is destroying America
and we need to pray that there are a whole lot Sarah Palins in the
wings to help restore America so there will be a future. I have
been in both political parties and now consider myself independent,
I preach good cop bad cop, the parties have been playing us like
    fools all along…….WJW

I am surprised by how many democrats and independents have turned away from Obama and are now willing to consider Sarah Palin…I personally think she’s great and refreshing–I always have since she hit the natl. political scene last year; but I’m wondering what the motive is? It seems to me that Obama is doing exactly what he said he was planning to do–at least, what I heard him say during the election. I’m just curious.

    Finished her book.

    Great book.

She’ll be President come Jan. 2013.

Her numbers are already improving vs. Obama and everything is lining up perfectly for this lady.

She’ll be a great leader of the country, and do her gender proud.

    Rhodi~

I don’t know what universe you have been living in when you say “Obama is doing exactly what he said he was planning to do … during the election”

No one ever heard ‘exactly what he was planning on doing’, he never said! That is what made it so frustrating to folks like me who never understood how others could vote for anyone simply for (undefined) Hope and Change.

Well, you have seen it now and I dare say you don’t like it – anyone with a bit of common sense wouldn’t. But the truly indoctrinated will still proclaim his greatness, even though (like Rhodi) they have no idea what they are talking about – and unwilling to accept that they have been had.

NOW you have seen what this man and his administration are capable of, and in what direction it will continue to fester. If you are not worried for your country, our way of life and the future of your children and grandchildren, then there is no hope for you!

Walt- I agree that we did not have Obama’s exact agenda before the election, but if you read his books, you had a pretty good idea of his driving philosophy (not unlike Mein Kampf). Ben Stein just published an article in NewsMax called I Fear The Angry President (or something like that). He quotes his friend, a psychiatrist, who picked up on this early on. Well, I read Obama’s book Dreams of My Father when it first came out (5 years ago?) and my first and major comment was that he wrote well (now that’s up for conjecture, too), and he seemed like an angry guy. But look around you at all the Libs you know…. the overriding motivation among all of them seems to be some grievance which they insist needs reprisal. True Conservatives, like Sarah Palin don’t have this rage-filled backdrop. Listen to a real Conservative, and you’ll hear about positives, dreams and concrete plans, not complaining about all the wrongs that have been done them.
