Leg Thrills and Spine Chills With Chris Matthews, Part 3: Apology to the “Enemy Camp” at West Point

December 4, 2009

West Point Barracks

Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Hardball, is not known for his tact, nor is there any need for his audience to guess what he really thinks during his show. Yet, after saying that President Obama had chosen to give his speech to the “enemy camp” at West Point, claimed in his apology that those who really know him knew what he actually meant. He obviously felt misunderstood.

My bet is that those who know him, as well as his audience, knew exactly what he meant. That’s why they corrected him. According to Matthews, it was a friend who is a former cadet that enlightened him about cadet conduct.

That’s nice. He owed the cadets an apology. In it, he inadvertently showed his complete ignorance of the military, their values, discipline and the role a president plays as a commander-in-chief.

Chris Matthews’ original statement:

“…I watched those cadets…but I didn’t see much excitement. But among the older people there I saw, if not resentment, skepticism. I didn’t see a lot of warmth on that crowd out there that the president chose to address tonight… He went to maybe the enemy camp tonight to make his case. I mean, that’s where Paul Wolfowitz used to write speeches for, back in the old Bush days. That’s where he went to rabble rouse… So I thought it was a strange venue.”

Then, obviously after being corrected to some extent, the following show Matthews offered this apology.

“…Let me just say to the cadets, their parents, former cadets and everybody that cares about this country, and those who defend it: I used the wrong words, and worst than that I said something that is just not right for that I deeply apologize…”

Then, he goes on to explain:

“My point was that the military up in West Point was probably a skeptical audience given his strong position against the war in Iraq, and generally more dovish image. I was wrong to make that conclusion based on the lack of applause or apparent enthusiasm in the ranks of officers and cadets last night. Cadet’s, one former cadet and a friend of mine just told me, aren’t suppose to show that kind of reaction to a speaker. He, a former cadet, reminded me that soldiers including those now in training to face the enemy, want wars to be fought effectively and ended as quickly as possible. I had no reason to assume that the cadets at West Point, or their officers, who are present last night are more hawkish than the president…”

Let’s say for just a moment that Matthews was correct in his original statement about the military being skeptical and unenthusiastic while listening to the president say he was sending more troops to Afghanistan. Alright, if that’s what he thought, what did he expect? Cheers of elation that they are going to get an opportunity to fight?

Matthews once again demonstrated both in his original statement his view of the military as the enemy, and in his apology, admitting he assumed the military was hawkish. Also, he thought it odd, that a “dovish” president would do just as a “hawkish” president did—address those who defend our country as the commander-in-chief.

Matthews gave nothing more than lip-service in his apology. While may no longer be politically correct to openly disrespect our military, he still managed to illustrate clearly the left’s ignorance of the military and their character.

Iwould like to believe this apology is sincere. However, my cynicism tells me this is about the Comcast buy of NBC/MSNBC. I know some of those Comcasters and they don’t like loosing! Let the games of JUSTICE begin!

Is Chris looking for “get lost” sympathy or did he just ‘Burb’, again.

Matthews is such a dope he doesn’t even warrant consideration. The more he says, the more he shows his lack of intelligence.

I noticed in Matthews apology how obviously he was following cue cards or whatever it is they use to read from, he was obviously reading a script. He was just covering his butt, and has no understanding or appreciation for the attitudes or mindset of our future Army officers. Hawkish? Please. Ms. Robinson’s analysis was right on.

Matthews is just so typical of the leftist journalists who hate the military and everything it stands for. They try not to understand the soldiers; it’s part of their gestalt for their stance in life — all their thinking and their reactions. This is just my personal observation.

I’m glad I could click on THE LEFT’S IGNORANCE OF THE MILITARY. Very rewarding. These left-leaning “journalists” make me sick. I know too many young brave soldiers who have great integrity, restraint, wisdom, and self-control for these leftist “observations,” or prejudices, to be anything but upsetting.

I just loved Mr. Tremoglie’s article. It explains and exposes how people like CM conduct themselves and keep a distance from our military personnel, like the soldiers are some kind of strange and definitely distasteful and beneath them. He’s writing about a William Arkin, supposed military specialist for NBC..

“Those opposed to the Iraq war demean those who serve in the military. They are continually characterized as losers who could not find a real job so they go into the service.”

They also love to make them out as baby killers and bloodthirsty weirdos.

“Their reportage is biased, it is firmly in the camp of the antiwar groups, and worst of all, it is packaged as if it is impartial. The liberal mainstream media have an innate hatred and contempt for those in the military.”

Refreshing to me to see this well-written article published here.

It is time for Mr.Mathews to go….He is totally
off the wall in many cases, and supports the
    current Administration without question. He
and Bill Maher suffer from Bush Derangement
    Sydrom….they should get together in a sit-com
    titled….We Hate Everything About America.

What a stupid man that is. “Stupid” is a word I rarely use and do not do so without thinking carefully about it, but he and Biden should get together sometime. They have a lot in common.

In a way Matthews was rigtht. West point is the enemy camp for Obama and his Socialist, Communist party. When soldiers in battle or those at West point, see what actions their Commander and Chief has been making, they have to consider Obama unwelcome.

Prosecuting Navy Seals who captured jihadists that killed four Americans and then burned and dragged their bodies through the streets and finally hanging them over a bridge for all to see. What was the charge? well supposedly one of the terrorist got a bloody lip. Geez thats almost as bad as waterboarding. Obama could easily stop that prosecution, but does nothing.

Next Obama and his socialist Attorney General, Eric Holder decide it will be a nice Christmas present to the city of New York by bringing the 9/11 perpetrators to New York for trial. Everyone knows especially our fighting men and women know that the real purpose of the coming show trial is to put America and George Bush on trial.

Our troops have watched Obama make trip after trip to foreign countried and apologize for what Obama calls Americas past faults. That so BS, America has been the savior of many of those same countries that Obama was apologizing to. America bailed out Europe, Freed the Iraqis from a tyrant, Fought to prevent the Imperial Armies of Japan from taking control of Asia. For all of this Obama continues to apologize.

When General McChrystal asked for 60,000 or more troops for Afghanistan, Obama fiddled around for 3 months and then finally uses a photo op to announce he is sending only 30,000 and none will arrive till next year. I doubt the men and women at West Point were happy to be part of Obama’s Photo op.

Matthews apology is so shallow. He screwed up once again by shooting off his big fat mouth before ever thinking of what garbage was coming out. The damage is done, but since Matthews works on one of the Obama networks, he doesn’t have to worry about being canned. Im sure he will continue to show his love of Obama even while the American people are showing their disgust with him.

Chris Matthews is a leftist propagandist not a newsman,
remember when a real news hero was epitomized by
a guy like Clark Kent who I might add was so much more
likable and believable. Matthews just can’t do any of
those cool things, wish he would just try to jump out
of a window and try to fly, I mean he thinks he’s Superman.
I just can’t figure what planet Matthews is from, certainly
not Krypton, how about Zippy town on planet Dimwittey.
Forget Obama I want to see his birth certificate, talk
    about aliens.
